　かつて啓蒙主義がフランスで麻疹の様に流行った時代がありました。彼らはこう言いました。「理性という神をもって事を行おう」

　しかし、その理性をもって動いた人々が何を行ったかというと、反対派の容赦ない虐殺です。ジャコバン派によるジロンド派の虐殺にとどまらず、理性を持った人々はヴァンデ戦争においてフランス市民を30万人も虐殺しました。

　なぜそうなったのか、そこには負の感情をバックにした大義名分があったからです。

　そして理性という大義名分を手に入れた人々は、容赦呵責のない攻撃を他者にぶつけました。

　それと同じ構図は、連合赤軍が「真の革命戦士」の美名のもとに行った総括による大量虐殺や、「女性解放」と「男女平等」を旗印に男性に不遇な自身の恨みと怒りをぶつけたフェミニズムが再現しています。

　

　なぜ大義名分を得ると人はここまで残酷になれるのかというと、絶対の正義を手に入れたことにより、心が弱い人間ほど何をしてもかまわないという、他者への蹂躙の欲望におぼれるからです。そう、怒りや恨みの感情といったルサンチマンです。絶対の正義を手に入れたとき、人は絶対の正義を重視するため、他者への配慮や優しさや想像力を失うからです。つまり、異なる他者をいつくしむ倫理や道徳があると、そうした攻撃や虐待が邪魔になるため、大義名分が必要になるのです。心が弱い人間ほど、何かしらの大義名分や正義にすがります。そこには「俺はこう思う。だからこうした」という自分の責任に基づいた意思が存在せず、常に責任を他者や空気や大義名分に丸投げするからです。
